When you buy a share of a company’s stock, you enter into a contract with that company which uses your money to help run its business. If the company makes a profit, it sends you a check for your share of the profit, for instance, $1.00 for each share of the stock. This money is called dividend. If the company makes a very big profit, it may decide to make the dividend bigger, say $2.00 for each share of the stock, and you get more money back even though the amount you invested is the same.
